Dr Elizabeth ASHLEY
Consultant Anaesthetist
Consultant in Cardiac Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London.
Dr Ashley qualified in medicine from The University of Birmingham in 1989. She undertook training in anaesthesia at various London teaching hospitals including The Middlesex, University College Hospital, St. George's Hospital and Great Ormond Street. She was also a registrar in anaesthesia and intensive care at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, South Australia. In 1998 she was appointed as a consultant with a special interest in cardiac and paediatric anaesthesia at King's College Hospital. In 2001 Dr Ashley moved to UCLH and The Heart hospital. In 2015 The Heart Hospital merged with St Bartholomew’s Hospital, forming The Bart’s Heart Centre, one of the largest cardiothoracic centres in Europe.
Areas of special interest include cardiothoracic anaesthesia, especially off-bypass surgery, anaesthesia for patients with grown up congenital heart disease, and the management of acute post-operative pain. She has a particular interest in the expanding field of anaesthesia for interventional cardiology and electrophysiological procedures.
She has advanced training and expertise in perioperative trans-oesophageal echocardiography and has attained North American Board Accreditation in perioperative echocardiography. She has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Elizabeth continues to lead the Fellowship Programme in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and is The Anaesthetic lead for the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories.
She provides anaesthesia for all aspects of cardiac and thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, general surgery and cardiology.
Personal interests include fitness, skiing, water-skiing, and property renovation.
